A Patch of Old Snow

There's a patch of old snow in a corner
That I should have guessed
Was a blown-away paper the rain
Had brought to rest.
It is speckled with grime as if
Small print overspread it,
The news of a day I've forgotten-
If I ever read it.

"What I like in a good author is not what he says, but what he whispers." -Logan Pearsall Smith

This quote talks about what the author is really meaning. The words on the page are just words and there is usually a deeper meaning. An example of this would be fairy tales. They are nice stories but they have morals that need to be picked up on and not directly stated. I agree with this and it takes a great author to convey meanings on a deeper scale.

My favorite short story is The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. This is my favorite one because it is truly a classic. It is a story that has stuck in my head and am glad to have read it. The language that he uses is quite amazing. The story as a whole is well written. Poe uses suspense and gives the piece a dark mood. This is my favorite short story.

Do you think young people today value their education as much as Sara Smolinsky does? Why or why not?

I think people do not value their education today as much as she does. This may be because young people today feel that their education is a burden. Most young people would rather stay at home then go to school. Sara on the other hand would rather go to school then stay at home. Education back then, especially for women, was viewed as a true treasure as not many people were educated. Today almost everybody gets an education and goes to college. People take for granted the opportunity of a college education because many people today do have that. Today education is viewed as a routine rather than an opportunity.

Bread Givers

While reading this book I can't help notice I have nothing in common with the main character. I also find it hard to connect with the story as a whole. The writing is very good in this book but it is not something I would read on my own time. It is not a difficult read by any means but the topic and themes don't really interest me at all. After reading the entire novel my thoughts could change but it seems unlikely. Some of my groups disscussions included comparing this novel to The Great Gatsby.
"There's nothing hard about writing. All you have to do is sit down and open up a vein." -Walter "Red" Smith

I agree with this quote because writing is something that comes easy to me. If it is something that I want to write about I have no trouble writing it. This quote shows that writing takes all of your emotion and you should write about something that inspires you.
